Music at Wynstream

Music at Wynstream beyond the curriculum

At Wynstream, we recognise the important role that music plays in school life for:

  • our enjoyment and pleasure,
  • our community cohesion
  •  and even our academic achievements.

We have a range of exciting musical opportunities for our pupils and believe that music should be accessible to all. Alongside the National Music curriculum teaching, we offer the following weekly:

  • EYFS and KS1 Singing Assembly
  • KS2 Singing Assembly
  • Music skills club (Years 1-3)
  • Choir (Years 4-6)
  • Guitar tuition (Year 4- delivered by a professional musician)
  • P-bone tuition (Year 5- delivered by Exeter School)

We love to allow pupils as many opportunities as possible to involve themselves in musical life here at Wynstream and we have even more exciting things to come in our musical future. We regularly have visiting musicians and have been treated to live music performances from the Salvation Army Band, the Exeter School Swunk Band and a local drummer. Alongside this, we have recently taken a year group to watch the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra at the Great Hall, University of Exeter.

In the summer term we have a visiting Samba musician to work with our year 6 children. They will receive tuition then perform live for our school and parents.

If you are a professional musician looking to perform to a very receptive and interested audience then we would love to hear from you.

Wynstream Music Centre

What is it?

  • Wynstream Music Centre is funded by Devon and Torbay Music Education Hubs, in partnership with Wynstream Primary School and BandStars CIC. It offers an opportunity for Primary-aged children to explore music, with a variety of options available.

  • This term, the options are singing in the choir, learning a brass instrument in a band (BandStars Brass Band – complete beginners welcome), or guitar club – or a mixture!

  • Hosted at Wynstream Primary School on Monday afternoons during term time, the centre will have the following timetable:

  • 3:30-4:15pm   BandStars (Brass Band) 1*
  • 3:30-4:15pm   Choir
  • 3:30-4:15pm   Guitar Club (subject to interest)
  • 4:15-5:00pm   BandStars (Brass Band) 2*

  • *Both bands are open to all pupils, and are not differentiated by ability. Choose whichever time works best! If you would like to sign up for more than one group, this is encouraged!

  • Instruments are available to hire at little or no cost, and the centre is designed to ensure equal access to the musical opportunities, regardless of financial circumstances. Please share with your children and visit the following link for more details or to sign up here: Wynstream Music Centre (office.com)

Wynstream Choir

The Wynstream choir have been singing together under the baton of Miss Jade Passfield since 2013. We perform annually at Christmas in Princesshay Shopping centre- much to the enjoyment of the Exeter community. Previously, we have also entertained local care homes and shops within our community. We have a large repertoire of music, including classical pieces, war songs alongside more modern pop songs.

Most notably, we were finalists in the BBC Radio Devon Star for Christmas 2019 where we performed in the Rivera centre in Torquay in the large school category. We have grand plans to return to this competition again in December 2023.

If you would like us to perform at a local venue then please contact Jade Passfield at jade.passfield@wynstreamprimary.org.uk
