PE & School Sport

At Wynstream Primary, our Physical Education curriculum develops confident, active and healthy children who understand the importance of physical activity for both their body and mind. Through a carefully sequenced programme from Nursery to Year 6, pupils build fundamental movement skills before applying them in increasingly complex sporting contexts.

In the Early Years, children explore physical movement through play. They develop balance, coordination and agility while learning to move safely and confidently. They begin to understand how exercise affects their bodies and how to work positively with others.

In Key Stage 1, pupils develop and refine basic motor control. They build fundamental skills such as running, jumping, throwing and catching before applying them in simple games. Children begin to understand rules, teamwork and fair play, while developing confidence in gymnastics and dance.

In Key Stage 2, pupils apply and refine their skills across a broad range of sports and physical activities. These include invasion games (such as football, netball, tag rugby and basketball), net and wall games (such as tennis and volleyball), striking and fielding (such as cricket and rounders), athletics, gymnastics, dance and Outdoor Adventurous Activities. Swimming and water safety are taught to ensure pupils can swim competently, confidently and proficiently over at least 25 metres and know how to stay safe in and around water.

As pupils progress, they move from developing control and coordination to applying tactics, strategies and positional play. Older pupils evaluate performance, apply attacking and defensive principles, exploit space and work collaboratively to improve as individuals and teams.

Across all year groups, pupils develop:

  • Agility, balance and coordination
  • Knowledge of rules and tactics
  • Teamwork and communication skills
  • Resilience and sportsmanship
  • An understanding of how exercise supports physical and emotional wellbeing

All children have opportunities throughout the year to take part in intra-school competitions, as well as represent the school in a wide range of local inter-school competitions and sporting events. We are proud to currently hold the Gold School Games Mark, recognising our commitment to high-quality PE, competitive sport and inclusive physical activity.

By the time they leave Wynstream Primary, pupils have developed the skills, knowledge and confidence to participate in a range of sports and physical activities, understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle and enjoy being physically active.

ESW-PE-Subject-Overview-002

At Wynstream Primary School we pride ourselves on providing high quality Physical Education for all of our pupils, both in a curricular and extra-curricular capacity. We believe PE and School Sport is a vital component in the holistic development of every child.

We strive to provide opportunities for all pupils to be active, through different strands of activity:

Physical Education

Physical education is the planned, progressive learning that takes place in school curriculum timetabled time and which is delivered to all pupils. This involves both ‘learning to move’ (i.e. becoming more physically competent) and ‘moving to learn’ (e.g. learning through movement, a range of skills and understandings beyond physical activity, such as co-operating with others). The context for the learning is physical activity, with children experiencing a broad range of activities. All pupils at our school receive a minimum of 2 hours of timetabled PE every week.

School Sport

School sport is the structured learning that takes place beyond the curriculum (i.e. in the extended curriculum) within the school; this is sometimes referred to as out-of-school-hours learning. Again, the context for the learning is physical activity. The ‘school sport’ programme has the potential to develop and broaden the foundation learning that takes place in physical education. There are a range of extra-curricular clubs available to pupils throughout the school, with both before and after school sports clubs being delivered year-round on a termly timetable. In addition, we take part in regular inter-school competitions and in particular, frequently participate in the School Games events.

Physical Activity

Physical activity is a broad term referring to all bodily movement that uses energy. It includes all forms of physical education, sports and dance activities. However, it is wider than this, as it also includes indoor and outdoor play, work-related activity, outdoor and adventurous activities, active travel (e.g. walking, cycling, rollerblading, scooting) and routine, habitual activities such as using the stairs, doing housework and gardening. All pupils receive 2-3 outdoor playtimes per day, and our active lunchtimes provide pupils with an opportunity to engage in different physical activities. In addition, out Active Travel scheme encourages pupils to walk or ride to school.
