Wynstream Primary School welcomes families to successful nursery open event

Wynstream Primary School recently welcomed local families to a drop-in event showcasing its new nursery, which is set to open in September 2026.

Held on Wednesday the 29th April, the event saw a strong turnout of parents and carers who attended across two sessions in the morning and afternoon. Visitors were given the opportunity to explore the new nursery environment, meet teachers and school staff, and learn more about how the provision will support children’s early development.

The new nursery, for children aged 3 to 5, will offer a warm and engaging setting designed to give children a positive start to their education. Families were able to take guided tours of the spaces and hear more about the school’s approach to early years learning.

The nursery will run weekday sessions from 9:00am to 12:00pm and 12:00pm to 3:00pm, with eligible families able to access up to 30 hours of funded childcare.

Families are now able to apply for places and those who were unable to attend the event are encouraged to get in touch with the school if they would like a tour. They can contact the school on 01392 284990 or email admin@wynstreamprimary.org.uk.

Former Wynstream Pupil Sets Guinness World Record in Exeter for Lightning-Fast Country Code Recognition

In a remarkable display of memory and speed Yuktha, a former pupil at Wynstream Primary School in Exeter has etched her name into the Guinness World Records by identifying the most country names by their international codes in just 60 seconds. The record-breaking event took place at Wonford Community Hall, drawing an enthusiastic crowd of supporters and dignitaries.

The event was attended by the Lord Mayor of Exeter, Yuktha’s head teacher, and her class teacher Mr. Coven, who proudly witnessed the culmination of her months of dedication and training. From rehearsing with flashcards to mastering obscure country codes, Yuktha’s journey has been one of discipline, curiosity, and passion.

The hall buzzed with excitement as Yuktha took the stage. With a timer ticking and a list of international codes flashing before her, she confidently matched each code to its corresponding country, setting a new benchmark in memory performance.

Yuktha’s accomplishment is expected to inspire students across the UK and beyond to explore the fascinating world of geography and international relations.

Elise Redman, Headteacher at Wynstream Primary School, said:

“This achievement is not just about numbers. It’s about celebrating the power of young minds and the incredible things they can accomplish with the right support and determination.”

Matthew Shanks, CEO of Education South West, said:

"Yuktha’s achievement is extraordinary, it shows what can be accomplished when curiosity, hard work and determination come together. At Education South West we are immensely proud of her, and we hope her success inspires other young people to aim high and pursue their passions."

Wynstream Primary School Launches New Toddler Group for Local Families

Wynstream Primary School has launched a new toddler group through its Community Hub, creating a welcoming weekly space for parents, carers and young children to come together at the heart of the local community.

Supported by a grant from Tesco, the Toddler Group runs every Wednesday morning and offers families the opportunity to enjoy playtime, companionship, refreshments and informal support in a relaxed and inclusive environment. The sessions have already attracted strong interest from local families.

The launch of the Toddler Group forms part of ESW’s wider Community Hub programme, which is grounded in the belief that schools act as community anchors. Schools within the academy trust provide safe, supportive spaces where families can connect, access support and build brighter futures together.

Through a growing network of Community Hubs across the trust, ESW is working with local partners to build wraparound services for families, supporting wellbeing and resilience from the early years onwards. The ambition is for each hub to reflect the needs of its local community while sharing a common purpose: strengthening life chances for children by supporting the whole family.

At Wynstream, the toddler group plays a key role in this work, supporting children’s early social development while helping parents and carers build connections with one another and with the school. Plans are already in place to invite local practitioners to future sessions, raising awareness of the wider support available to families. The group will also introduce themed weeks linked to festivals, events and celebrations throughout the year.

Elise Redman, Headteacher at Wynstream Primary School, said:

“We’re delighted to have launched the toddler group to support our community. It’s already proving to be a really positive space for families to come together, build friendships and feel a sense of belonging. Creating these early connections with families is incredibly important to us, and we welcome newcomers.”

Matthew Shanks, CEO of Education South West, said:

“Our Community Hubs reflect our belief that schools sit at the heart of their communities. The launch of the toddler group at Wynstream is a great example of how small, thoughtful initiatives can make a meaningful difference, supporting families early on and helping children get the very best start in life.”

Consultation on Proposal to Change Age Range from 4–11 to 3–11 Years (Effective September 2026)

We are writing to inform you that Wynstream Primary School is proposing to change its age range from 4–11 years to 3–11 years, by introducing a nursery/pre-school provision for children aged 3+. This change is considered a significant alteration under Department for Education (DfE) guidance and requires formal consultation.

Educational Reasons for the Change

  • Improved School Readiness: High-quality early years education supports children’s social, emotional, and language development, ensuring they are better prepared for Reception.
  • Continuity of Learning: Offering nursery places within the school provides a seamless transition into primary education, reducing anxiety and improving outcomes.
  • Meeting Local Need: There is increasing demand for funded early years places for 3-year-olds in our community. This proposal will help meet that need.
  • Raising Standards: Evidence shows that early intervention narrows attainment gaps and supports disadvantaged pupils, aligning with our commitment to inclusion and excellence.

Consultation Details

The consultation will run for four weeks, starting:

· Start Date: Tuesday 13 January 2026

· End Date: Tuesday 10 February 2026
