At Wynstream Primary School, we want every child to feel proud of their creativity. Our Art Curriculum is designed not only to teach skills but to spark joy, confidence, and curiosity. We believe art is a powerful way for children to express themselves, explore their ideas, and discover new ways of seeing the world.
From the early years through to Year 6, children enjoy a rich variety of artistic experiences. They learn to draw, paint, print, sculpt, and experiment with mixed media, using high-quality materials and working in inspiring ways. Rather than focusing on perfect results, we encourage children to explore, take risks, and enjoy the process of making. This helps them develop resilience, independence, and a genuine love of learning.
A key part of our curriculum is introducing children to a wide range of artists, designers, and makers from different cultures, time periods, and backgrounds. This helps pupils understand that art belongs to everyone, and they see themselves reflected in the creative world around them. By learning from diverse artistic traditions, children develop curiosity, respect, and a broader understanding of the world.
As they grow, pupils begin to explore how artists work and why art matters. They learn that art can tell stories, celebrate identity, express emotions, and even inspire change. Older children are encouraged to think deeply, draw on their own experiences, and create personal, meaningful artwork that they are proud to share.
Sketchbooks are used throughout the school, giving children a special place to record ideas, practise techniques, and reflect on their progress. This helps them to see themselves as real artists and nurtures thoughtful, reflective learners.
Most importantly, our Art Curriculum helps children feel confident in their abilities and excited about their creativity. We want every child to leave our school not only with strong artistic skills, but with the belief that their ideas matter and their voice deserves to be heard.
By nurturing creativity, imagination, cultural awareness, and self-expression, we aim to give our pupils the foundations for success both in school and in life—and to make their time with us truly joyful.
