At Wynstream Primary School, we are committed to fostering creativity, problem-solving, and practical skills through our Design and Technology (DT) curriculum. Our approach is designed to equip pupils with the knowledge and confidence to design, make, and evaluate a wide range of products, while developing resilience and independence.
From the early years through to Year 6, pupils engage in a variety of hands-on projects across textiles, mechanisms, structures, and cookery. Each unit encourages children to plan, experiment, and reflect on their work, with an emphasis on the process as well as the final outcome. Pupils are supported to take risks, learn from mistakes, and develop a positive attitude towards practical challenges.
The curriculum introduces pupils to the work of designers, engineers, and makers from diverse backgrounds and cultures. This broadens their understanding of the subject and helps them appreciate the impact of design and technology in everyday life.
As pupils progress, they are encouraged to work collaboratively, communicate their ideas clearly, and consider the needs of others in their designs. Older children are given opportunities to undertake more complex projects, drawing on their own experiences and interests to create purposeful and meaningful work.
Throughout the school, pupils keep records of their ideas, plans, and evaluations, supporting them to become reflective and thoughtful learners.
Our aim is for every child to leave our school with strong practical skills, confidence in their abilities, and an understanding of how design and technology can contribute positively to society. By nurturing creativity, critical thinking, and self-expression, we provide pupils with a strong foundation for future learning and success.
