St Nicholas crowned EPFL champions!

Wynstream Sports • Jul 04, 2017

St Nicholas Catholic Primary School became champions of the Exeter Primary Football League 2016/17 season, after winning their 3 knockout matches in the finals held at St Peter’s C of E Aided School yesterday.

St Nicholas qualified for the finals after winning Group A of the regular league season. The other teams who qualified for the final were; Clyst St Mary (2nd Group A), Exwick Heights (3rd Group A), Whipton Barton (2nd Group B), Wynstream (3rd Group B), Alphington (1st Group C), Bowhill (2nd Group C) & Clyst Heath (3rd Group C). The winners of Group B, Woodwater Academy, were unfortunately unable to attend the finals.

The EPFL finals consisted of three rounds, quarter-finals, semi-finals & the finals. Each team was seeded by their league position in their respective groups, and opponents for the first round were then drawn from a hat. The results of the finals were:-

Quarter-Final
Alphington 0-0 Exwick Heights ( Exwick won 2-1 on pens)
Clyst Heath 1-1 Whipton Barton (Whipton won 2-1 on pens)
Wynstream 1-3 Clyst St Mary
St Nicholas 2-0 Bowhill

Semi-Final
Exwick Heights 2-1 Whipton Barton
St Nicholas 2-1 Clyst St Mary

3rd/4th playoff
Whipton Barton 2-2* Clyst St Mary * shared 3rd place

Final
St Nicholas 1-0 Exwick Heights
(AET)

After a close match, which had to be decided by 2 mins of Extra Time, St Nicholas were able to finally breakdown the Exwick defence, and were crowned as the overall winners of the EPFL 2016/17 season. They join previous winners Stoke Hill Junior School (2014/15) & Wynstream Primary School (2015/16) as champions of the EPFL and get to keep the coveted trophy for 1 year, when they will aim to be the first team to successfully defend their title.

Congratulations to all schools which took part in the finals, and a huge thank you to all players, staff, parents and schools that participated in the 2016/17 season. We will be back next season with the new campaign in what will certainly be a well contested competition.

As you are aware there is currently an amber weather warning in place as storm Ciaran moves towards Devon. An amber warning presents a risk to life, but there is also a large amount of uncertainty about this weather front which means it could increase to a red warning overnight. The combination of wind, rain, and the storm moving over warm sea waters increases risk of very high wind speeds, flooding and trees falling. An emergency strategy meeting has taken place today and it was agreed that we need to ensure school leaders fully appreciate that the current weather warning presents a risk to life and could worsen. Based on the information we have, Devon County Council have taken the decision today to ask all staff where possible to work from home. We are asking all schools to consider the high level of risk presented by this storm and make a decision today about their operations tomorrow. This potential risk to life means that we have taken the regrettable decision to close schools tomorrow. We do not do this lightly. The school will be shut to all pupils and staff. Information on work provided will be sent out later this afternoon Schools will be open as normal on Friday 3rd November. Thank you for your understanding.

On Wednesday 19th April our children began to think about ‘rights’ and what being a ‘Rights Respecting School’ means. We will be looking for parents, carers, staff, governors, and children to help us on this journey. Please speak to Ms Redman or Miss Humphreys if you are interested in helping. Please look at the following for more information: What is a Rights Respecting School? - UNICEF UK

A message from our Chair of Governors. Hello. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you all back to the school after the Easter holidays. Together we are continuing to deliver support, exciting opportunities and high quality of teaching and learning across the school and the community.
