Modern Foreign Languages

At Wynstream Primary School, we want every child to feel proud of their language learning. Our French Curriculum is designed not only to teach vocabulary and grammar but to spark joy, confidence, and curiosity. We believe learning a language is a powerful way for children to communicate, explore new cultures, and see the world from a different perspective.

From Year 3 through to Year 6, children enjoy a rich variety of language experiences. They learn to listen, speak, read, and write in French through engaging activities, songs, games, and conversations. Rather than focusing solely on accuracy, we encourage children to take risks, practise speaking, and enjoy the process of learning. This helps them develop resilience, independence, and a genuine love of languages.

A key part of our curriculum is introducing children to French culture and traditions, as well as the wider French-speaking world. This helps pupils understand that language connects people globally, and they see themselves as part of an international community. By learning about diverse cultures, children develop curiosity, respect, and a broader understanding of the world.

As they grow, pupils begin to explore how language works and why learning another language matters. They learn that French can help them share ideas, express feelings, and build friendships beyond their own country. Older children are encouraged to think deeply, draw on their own experiences, and use French creatively in real-life contexts.

MFL books are used from Year 3 to Year 6, giving children a special place to record vocabulary, practise phrases, and reflect on their progress. This helps them to see themselves as real linguists and nurtures thoughtful, reflective learners.
