3 i Statement

Intent


Wynstream’s ambitious and knowledge rich curriculum is designed to promote a love of learning and to ensure that all our pupils leave with the tools for success in the next phase of their education and beyond.  It’s design organisation and implementation are based on the most current scientific understanding of how children learn. Theories of cognitive research relating to the transference of information from working to long term memory are at the heart of our approach to teaching and learning. 

 

Our curriculum promotes fluency in all subject areas as well as opportunities for pupils to problem solve, articulate understanding, and apply their learning in a variety of different contexts.  So that they may become positive contributors to society, our pupils will learn about the most important ideas and accomplishments of the past alongside the serious issues we currently face as a civilisation. 

 

Our school’s values of integrity, resilience, responsibility, curiosity and aspiration are firmly embedded in all of our learning as is the promotion of good mental health and the importance of staying safe, both on and offline.  Our curriculum celebrates religious and cultural diversity and fosters an appreciation for the multicultural society in which we live. 

 

Implementation


The implementation of each subject in our curriculum is designed to ensure that learning meets or exceeds the requirements of the National Curriculum. Subject Leaders conduct regular monitoring to ensure that it is delivered rigorously and according to a subject specific implementation document that sets out the expected progression of knowledge acquisition as well as cross curricular links, where appropriate.


Knowledge organisers, home learning and ‘learning walls’ support the transference of knowledge to long-term memory alongside other subject- specific retrieval practices. Learning across the curriculum is enhanced by a variety of experiences including assemblies, field trips, local visits, ‘expert’ visitors, clubs, competitions, and fund-raising events.

 

Impact


We expect our pupils to move on to the next phase of their education with the skills, knowledge and social capital required for future success as well as a passion for learning and a desire to positively impact their world.


The impact of our curriculum will be judged by the quality and breadth of work in pupil’s learning journals and the extent to which they are able to accurately recall and articulate their learning. Senior leaders and subject leads monitor individual subjects using pupil voice and review the feedback to further develop each subject. Governors are kept abreast of developments and the progress of the curriculum by participating in monitoring walks and interviewing pupils.


The Impact of our curriculum is also measured through statutory assessments…

  • In EYFS, the percentage of pupils achieving a Good Level of Development.
  • The percentage of pupils passing the Year 1 phonic screening test.
  • The percentage of pupils at the end of Key Stage 1 working towards or, at the expected standard or, achieving greater depth in Reading, Writing and Maths. The percentage of pupils achieving the expected standard in science is also recorded.
  • At the end of Year 4 the percentage of pupils passing the multiplication tables check.
  • At the end of Key Stage 2 the percentage of pupils working towards or, at the expected standard or, achieving greater depth in Reading, Writing and Maths. The percentage of pupils achieving the expected standard in Science.
